Spain’s U-19s hold the nerve to reach the final

Andrea Sánchez cancelled out Léger’s opener with an equally stunning strike. Nahikari struck the deciding kick as Spain won 5-4 on pens.

Spain’s Women’s Under-19 team booked their place in the European Championships final after beating France in a game which remained unresolved after 120 minutes. Jorge Gilda’s team dominated play during the opening minutes but found themsleves a goal down when France captain Marie-Charlotte Léger had Elena De Toro beaten with a fine strike into the top corner on 36 minutes. Both teams were back level six minutes later when Andrea Sánchez equalized with a superb chip from a tight angle. It was still level on full- time and after a further 30 minutes of extra-time and just like Friday’s other semi-final between Germany and Spain, the game was decided from the spot. Spain showed their supremacy in the shoot-out, scoring all of their spot-kicks with Laura Domínguez, Sandra Hernández, Laura Ortega and Beatriz Beltrán all converting. Nahikari García struck the deciding kick as Spain won the shoot-out 5-4 and will face Sweden in the final at the Netanya Municipal Stadium on Monday. Spain will be hoping to repeat their triumph of 2003/4 when they defeated favourites Germany to lift the trophy.
