Diver killed by 'very large' shark in front of terrified daughter

KILLER: A great white shark like the one that attacked the scalloping diving dad

The hobbyist was swimming in shallow waters to collect shellfish when he was attacked by the predator. It comes after Australian pro surfer Mick Fanning returned to the water for the first time since he survived a shark attack live on TV.
The latest victim had been diving with his daughter from their small aluminium dinghy off the east coast of Tasmania, Australia, when things took a turn for the worst at around 8am local time.

SHARK ATTACK: Diver was killed by shark off Maria Island on Tasmania's east coast

Inspector David Wiss of Tasmania Police told a press conference: "Today there's been a terrible tragedy.
"There's been a fatal shark attack.
"It involves a male in his late 40s.
"He was near Maria Island, very close to Lachlan Island.
"He was scallop diving with his adult daughter.
"They went into the water, they collected a number of scallops.
"My understanding is the daughter returned to the boat and the father returned to get more scallops.

SURVIVOR: Pro surfer Mick Fanning returns to the sea for the first time since he fought off a shark

"He did not return to the surface.
"His daughter became worried and went down to check on her father.
"She saw a very large shark and saw her father being attacked by the shark."
Insp Wiss later added the daughter set off a flare for help and called the emergency services.
He explained: "Boaters attended the area and they pulled up a male using the air hose he was attached to but unfortunately he was fatally injured.
"This is a deeply traumatic incident for the daughter.
"We're providing support as best we can [and] we've got professional critical incident people attending their residence as we speak."
The Mayor of Hobart said a 15ft white pointer, as great white sharks are also known in Australia, had been spotted
several times in the preceding weeks.
