The Catsuit Makes a Comeback: How to Wear the Unitard

When was the last time you saw a unitard? Hint: Featured in a movie (hello, Avatar! ) or on a runway (hello, Christian Dior !) doesn’t count. While the one-piece garment stretching from top to toes might not be commonplace in wardrobes yet, the longtime workout favorite is making a comeback. Earlier this month Kim
Kardashian West donned a blush version jetting home and Demi Moore sported a form-flattering sleek slate gray iteration while traveling out of Los Angeles. Star sightings aside, I was reintroduced to the body stocking a couple of months ago
when Vogue’ s Sally Singer paused our momentum at a recent SoulCycle class and redirected my gaze saying, “That bob; that
unitard.” Despite the clublike environment and bopping music, the next 45 minutes were focused on the languid creature clad in a body stocking, her bob swaying, occupying bike 27. She was a
real-life Wonder Woman! While wearing a unitard takes a heavy dose of confidence (paired with some pre-existing muscle definition, naturally), what was most telling about her style was her carefree approach to taking the outfit from the gym to the street with nothing more than the addition of a slouchy, boyfriend sweater. And this is where the fun begins: elevating workout gear from the front row at SoulCycle to the front row of life. Test
the waters in a traditional Supplex-Lycra style by Live the Process as a layering piece beneath oversize knits, techy
outerwear, and slouchy slip dresses. Ambitious winter workout devotees will want to swap out tights for American Apparel ’s placket front thermals. With a distressed flannel shirt wrapped around the waist and a wool skirt, it’s like the nineties grunge movement— momentarily—joined Equinox.
Meanwhile, fashion-conscious girls would do well to look to the quirky designs of English label Ekat . Sienna Miller, Rita
Ora, and Mary Charteris are among a few who have sported the bold and graphic designs at Glastonbury. And while you’re adding extra flair to your zentai, just remember that when wearing a body
stocking in public, one isn’t the loneliest number. Hair courtesy of Glenn Ellis of Marie Robinson salon; Makeup courtesy of
