Types of hormones and their functions

 

Hormonal imbalances can involve many different hormones depending on the person's age, sex, and health condition. Some of the most important hormones include:

  1. Insulin – Regulates blood sugar levels. Imbalances can contribute to diabetes and weight gain.
  2. Cortisol – The body's primary stress hormone. Too much or too little can affect weight, sleep, blood pressure, and energy.
  3. Thyroid Hormones (T3 and T4) – Control metabolism, body temperature, and energy production.
  4. Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) – Produced by the pituitary gland to regulate thyroid hormone production.
  5. Estrogen – A key female sex hormone involved in reproduction, bone health, and menstrual cycles.
  6. Progesterone – Helps regulate the menstrual cycle and supports pregnancy.
  7. Testosterone – Important for muscle mass, bone strength, libido, and reproductive health in both men and women.
  8. Growth Hormone (GH) – Supports growth, muscle development, and tissue repair.
  9. Human Growth Factor (IGF-1) – Works with growth hormone to promote growth and metabolism.
  10. Leptin – Signals fullness and helps regulate appetite.
  11. Ghrelin – Known as the "hunger hormone"; stimulates appetite.
  12. Adiponectin – Helps regulate glucose levels and fat metabolism.
  13. Melatonin – Regulates sleep and the body's internal clock.
  14. Prolactin – Stimulates breast milk production and has other reproductive functions.
  15. Luteinizing Hormone (LH) – Triggers ovulation in women and supports testosterone production in men.
  16. Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) – Regulates egg development in women and sperm production in men.
  17. Oxytocin – Involved in childbirth, breastfeeding, and social bonding.
  18. Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) – Regulates calcium and phosphorus levels.
  19. Aldosterone – Helps control blood pressure by regulating sodium and potassium balance.
  20. Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH/Vasopressin) – Controls water balance and blood pressure.
  21. Epinephrine (Adrenaline) – Supports the body's "fight-or-flight" response.
  22. Norepinephrine (Noradrenaline) – Helps regulate alertness, blood pressure, and stress responses.
  23. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) – A precursor hormone that can be converted into estrogen and testosterone.

These hormones are produced by the endocrine glands, including the thyroid, pituitary, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries, testes, and hypothalamus. An imbalance in one hormone can affect several others because the endocrine system is highly interconnected.

Common symptoms of hormonal imbalance include:

  • Unexplained weight gain or weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Mood changes (anxiety, depression, irritability)
  • Poor sleep
  • Hair loss or excessive hair growth
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Reduced libido
  • Infertility
  • Acne or skin changes
  • Increased hunger or cravings
